If you find yourself eastbound on I90 west of the airport today, see if you can check out the ad for a 92 Nissan Altima that’s temporarily exposed. The crew was up there putting up a new ad, but there was one there underneath that said “Travel in Luxury, Not in Debt” with a picture of said Altima.

See.. It’s a practical car.

I’m pretty sure that really is a 300SL. It’s worth big $ if so, and that’s awesome that the guy threw a hitch on it so he can take his bike along for the ride.

Except for the picture quality... That guy is doing it right.

What struck me most about it (besides the bike) was just how long and low that car is. Simply stunning. And that top isn’t black- it’s dark green.

A 92 Altima? Wow, apparently they never remove those old ads...

I work just east of the airport, but live south. That was right by the O’Hara toll plaza, as you probably realized.

Still can’t believe that it was just cruising up the highway during rush hour. Great to see it being driven.

I’ve had authorship here for about 9 months, and hadn’t posted yet, but had to share this one.

Also- is that about right on the value? I know the Gullwing is probably north of that but wasn’t sure where the roadsters were at. Seems right though. The license plate was simply “300 SL”

Roadsters have seen a large jump in recent years, and the really good ones are now seven figures.

I wonder where one would go to even get a hitch added to a 300sl

I took a walk through Hemmings.com, and the ones listed with prices all averaged around that. The rest said “Inquire” or “Auction”

That’s a very good question. Most places that do that sort of thing would probably refuse to touch it. I’m guessing that the hitch has been there a long time?

So, take a piece of automotive history that’s worth a million dollars, throw a hitch and a bike on the back, and tackle Chicago rush hour traffic? Done.

I’m sure a lot of people consider that blasphemy but I LOVE it.

Yeah, I work in Rosemont so I definitely recognized it.

It seems like they are removed as new ones go up, no idea why the old one was up there. It looked like an Altima to me in the ad, but my mind couldn’t connect that generation to luxury so I was looking for J30 ads but found an old press release with the same text as the billboard (I didn’t see any branding, just the text and a fuzzy picture of the car.)

And to add to your photo, I just remembered seeing a bunch of Mecum Auction trailers out at the Renaissance in Schaumburg. This may be somehow related.

A buddy of mine had a 92 Altima for a long time. IIRC, the J30 from that time frame had a similar silhouette, so it could be either, maybe.

That’s right- I think the auction is this weekend. I wish I could go, but I have a 2 month old at home so that ain’t happening.

Wow, pic of the day. Color is hard to judge, but to me resembles DB630 yellow the most. If so, this is a late run car, after 1960 or so.

My wild assumption is that the owner is one of the lucky demographic who bought such things for 50K 30 years ago, and is now enjoying it. Nice to see it not rotting away in a garage.

Thanks! McMike cleaned up the photo in his reply, so you can get a better look at the color there if you’re curious.

I think your assumption is pretty reasonable. Hard to believe someone would add a hitch if they paid a million for it, but if he’s owned it for 30 years, then why not? I’d bet the hitch was added before the run up too.

I really dislike the looks of modern road bikes with a “compact frame”. Put the top tubes back in straight position or at least upwards sloping.

The 300SL has a really nice color.

Nice. The color is pretty yellow, I think that’s it.

I remember 20 years ago, these brought 250K or so - maybe a little dear to hitch a bike to, but have definitely outpaced inflation or wage growth. Driving it won’t really depreciate it, might as well use it - I would.

I just ID’d the rack. They should totally add this dude to their gallery.

Found the owner. He has owned it since 1974, and it 9k miles on it when he bought it.

Wow - that’s awesome. Great find! I love to hear people’s stories and the history. So, he’s putting 2-3k miles a year on that car - great that he’s enjoying it. I live near Oak Brook (where the video was filmed), and would bet that he lives not far away from me. I’ll have to keep my eyes open for it again.

Thanks for sharing this — how did you find it?

Interesting follow up to this - on my way to work this morning, I was behind a silver Porsche 930 Turbo Carrera on the same route. It had a *very* similar bike rack on the back - and, in all likelihood, the same bike on it.

No SR20 because there was a Cook County Sheriff alongside the whole time, too.
